1018 Carbon Steel
1018 Carbon steel is one of the most commonly available grades in the world. This carbon steel is easily formed, machined, fabricated, and welded. Welding 1018 can be done with any standard method, without pre-heating or post-heating. 1018 steel is a general-purpose, low-carbon steel with good case hardening qualities. It is especially suited to cold forming and bending operations. 1018 is suitable for parts that require cold forming (such as crimping, swaging, or bending). For severe bends, however, stress relieving may be necessary to prevent cracking.
Applications
Some applications include: Fasteners, Anchor bolts, Pins, Rods, Sprockets, Gears & Tool Holders
Requirements
Common specifications for this grade:
- ASTM A29
- ASTM A108
- ASTM A576
Shapes and Sizes
Peterson Steel supplies 1018 steel bar in a wide range of sizes. The shapes available for this grade include:
- Rounds (HR, CF, T&P, F&RT)
- Flats (CF)
- Hexagons (CF)
- Squares (CF)
Standard “1018 Grade” Chemical Composition

Sulfur (max) | 0.050 |
12L14 Carbon Steel
12L14 Cold Finish Carbon Steel Round Bar is a low friction metal that maintains a smooth machined surface, allowing for increased tool life. This grade of carbon steel is recommended for the manufacturing of high-speed automatic screw machine parts. This standard resulfurized and rephosphorized low carbon steel benefits from the addition of tiny lead particles, providing enhanced machinability. Although 12L14 CF Bar provides excellent machinability, the added lead content reduces the overall strength of the alloy.
Applications
12L14 is used extensively in automatic screw machines for manufacturing numerous parts requiring considerable machining and close tolerances, along with a smooth finish. Some applications include: Couplings, Inserts, Bushings, Hydraulic hose fittings.
Requirements
Common specifications for this grade:
- ASTM A108

Sulfur | 0.026-0.35 |
1045 Carbon Steel
1045 steel is a medium carbon steel which is recognized for its good tensile strength and hardness. It is also popular because of its ability to be machined easily. Machining processes like milling, turning, tapping and broaching can be performed without any problems. Another favorable feature of 1045 is that it can be welded easily, making it a suitable steel for various structures. Suitable for flame and induction hardening.
Applications
This grade of steel is used for axles, bolts, forged connecting rods, crankshafts, torsion bars, light gears, guide rods etc.

1144 Carbon Steel
1144 steel is a type of medium carbon resulfurized carbon steel containing Manganese and Sulfur. It offers wearability without case hardening, strength without heat treating, plus excellent machinability and tool life. Other benefits include resistance to fatigue and stress, balanced working and minimum warpage and distortion. 1144 may be flame hardened to further enhance strength and surface properties. The free cutting steel has been used where resistance to deformation and wear are essential and can be used as an economical replacement for more expensive quenched-and-tempered alloy grades.
Applications
Spindles, gears, piston rods, pinions, sleeves, lead screws, racks, shafts, pump shafts, arbors, link pins, mandrels, boring bars, collets, bushings.
